To ensure your personal information remains confidential, CalPERS has taken several steps to safeguard the integrity of our communications and computing infrastructure. These safeguarding efforts include, but are not limited to, username and password authentication, monitoring, auditing, and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption of your browser communications. We also enhanced security by adding support for personal security icons and personal messages shown to you during the log-in process to indicate you're at the authentic CalPERS website.

Our websites and computer systems are for legal and authorized use only. Unauthorized access, attempted access, or use of this or any related State of California system is a violation of California Penal Code, Section 502 (PDF) and/or applicable federal law, and may be subject to prosecution. It’s important to know what CalPERS considers your personal information. Personal information maintained by CalPERS may include:

  • Email address
  • Financial information
  • Home address
  • Medical history
  • Personally identifiable information
  • Social Security number
  • Telephone number

CalPERS is committed to protecting your confidential member information. For more details about what constitutes personal or confidential information, see Government Code Sections 11015.5 and 20230.

Protection of Personal Information

We implemented the following procedures and technology to protect your personal information:

  • Employee access to member information is limited to those who have a business reason to access the information.
  • Information transmitted to/from CalPERS is sent using an appropriate encryption process.
  • Physical security and technological means to prevent unauthorized access to your information, including firewalls, anti-virus protection, real-time monitoring, and other techniques.
  • Policies and procedures to maintain the proper security of information databases, applications, networks, and physical records.

Your CalPERS ID

Each CalPERS member is assigned a unique 10-digit identifier, which we refer to as the CalPERS Identification Number, or CalPERS ID.

You can use your CalPERS ID as an alternative to your Social Security number when conducting any CalPERS business.

Your CalPERS ID will always remain the same, even if you retire or go to work for another employer.

Ways to find your CalPERS ID include:

  • Log in to my|CalPERS, selecting the Profile tab and then select Personal Information.
  • Refer to any correspondence from CalPERS, such as your Annual Member Statement.
  • Speak with a customer service representative by calling 888 CalPERS (or 888-225-7377) or
    TTY (877) 249-7442.

If you haven't registered for my|CalPERS, select the Participant option and Continue, followed by Register Now. You'll need to create a username and password to obtain secure online access to your CalPERS account information.

Your Password

Your password is your personal, confidential key to accessing CalPERS information online. Your password and your username are both Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encrypted. During the online access registration and log in processes, we request information about you so we can authenticate who you say you are.

You play an important role in making sure your confidential information is secure. To ensure your personal password remains secure, you should never reveal it to anyone. If you believe someone has gained access to your password, you should change it immediately.

When you log in to my|CalPERS always verify that your personal security icon and personal security message are the ones you chose. These are known only to you and CalPERS and would not appear on an imposter site. If these security items do not appear or are not the ones you chose, do not enter your password and contact us for assistance.

CalPERS employees will never ask for your current password in any form including over the telephone or via email.

We recommend you always log out when leaving our websites and close your browser. As an extra security measure, if you’re using one of our online services and no activity is detected for 15 minutes, you’ll automatically be logged out. If this happens, you may receive an error message. If you do, simply close all your browser windows, reopen, and navigate back to our website to continue.

Your Voluntary Use of Our Website & Online Services

If you chose to use an online service that asks for specific information, such as completing a request for assistance, subscribing to email subscriptions, sending an email, or completing online transactions, more detailed data will be collected. It is voluntary for you to engage in these activities.

If you choose to submit information to us, it will be securely transmitted to our internal databases. It will only be used for the purpose it was provided, and will not be shared with another entity unless otherwise required by law. If we need to coordinate efforts with other parties, such as the State Controller’s Office, employers, or health plans, it will only be used to conduct the CalPERS-related business, including electronic notifications of educational events and surveys.

The use of our websites is voluntary. If you don’t wish to conduct electronic business with CalPERS, our staff is available to assist you by phone at 888 CalPERS (or 888-225-7377) or you can visit one of our eight Regional Offices located throughout the state.
