Robert Paterson

Head of Investment Technology & Performance

Robert Paterson was appointed head of Investment Technology & Performance in June 2022. He leads CalPERS’ investment data and technology modernization initiative, aligning operating model, data, and systems capabilities to strengthen investment decision-making, enhance governance, and mitigate operational risk across the total fund.

Since joining CalPERS in 2016, Robert has advanced enterprise performance and analytics capabilities that provide greater transparency into portfolio results and support the organization’s total portfolio approach. He led the achievement of compliance with the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®) and has driven improvements in data quality, controls, and operational efficiency across the Investment Office.

Prior to joining CalPERS, Robert spent 15 years at Franklin Templeton Investments, where he led operating model and technology transformations across investment performance, risk management, and financial operations. His work integrated performance and risk oversight, modernized global platforms, and streamlined cross-functional processes to enhance efficiency and governance.

Robert holds the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation and the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM). He earned a Bachelor of Science in managerial economics and a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Davis.
