Derek Walker

Derek Walker joined CalPERS in July 2026 and serves as managing investment director for Total Fund Portfolio Management.

In this role, he supports the chief investment officer in advancing the Total Portfolio Approach (TPA) across the investment office, overseeing teams responsible for asset allocation, active risk allocation, multi-asset strategy development, financing and liquidity management, economics, and total fund risk analytics.

Prior to joining CalPERS, Derek spent nearly 20 years at CPP Investments, formerly known as the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. During this time, he gained extensive experience with TPA by leading multiple groups in the Total Fund Management department including Portfolio Design and Construction, Active Investment Management, Portfolio Engineering, and most recently Total Fund Management Research.

Derek previously held positions at Barclays Global Investors and MSCI.

He earned a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Science from Queen’s University in Canada and an MBA from INSEAD, a French business school. Derek also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
