Streamlined navigation and fresh look enhance customer experience

SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) has launched a new website (www.calpers.ca.gov), to better serve its members, employers, and stakeholders. The site features multiple improvements including a new interface, upgraded search capability, and compatibility with mobile devices.

The new site also has custom content for active members, retirees, and employer agencies. Additional website improvements include more pathways to popular destinations, and a life events area that focuses on what CalPERS members need to know during different stages of their career. The website offers a new approach to presenting information, resulting in less content delivered in a more effective way. The site has been condensed from 1,300 pages to approximately 700 pages. Although the volume of pages has diminished, information necessary and important to users has been retained. Video and social media are also key components in the site's new structure.

"Customer feedback was the key ingredient in the development of our new website," said Anne Stausboll, CalPERS Chief Executive Officer. "Our goal was to create a site with the user in mind."

Two years in the making, development of the new site involved a very deliberate and thorough review of content by staff, combined with input from more than 1,000 members, retirees, employers, and stakeholders through surveys, focus groups, interviews, and one-on-one usability testing.

Since June 2014, CalPERS' website amassed approximately 4.8 million visits by 3 million unique users. Of the 4.8 million visits, over 500,000 came from mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

For more than eight decades, CalPERS has built retirement and health security for state, school, and public agency members who invest their lifework in public service. Our pension fund serves more than 1.7 million members in the CalPERS retirement system and administers benefits for 1.4 million members and their families in our health program, making us the largest defined-benefit public pension in the U.S. CalPERS’ total fund market value currently stands at approximately $300 billion.
