Election runs through October 2, 2017, for selection of two representatives

SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Public Employees' Retirement System will start the 2017 Board of Administration Member-at-Large Election on September 1, 2017, as ballots are mailed for selection of two seats on the CalPERS Board of Administration. CalPERS also announced that a Board Election Candidate Forum will be held on September 7 to help inform voters and give the candidates the opportunity to deliver remarks and answer questions.

Board Election ballots will be mailed September 1 to the home addresses of eligible voters, with the voting period running through October 2. All CalPERS members active as of July 1, 2017, or retired on or before July 1 are eligible to vote.

Members can cast their ballot in one of three easy convenient ways: online, by phone, or by mail.

The CalPERS Board of Administration makes important decisions about members' benefits, including pensions and health benefits, making member voting in Board elections an important civic duty.

The terms of incumbents will expire on January 15, 2018. The new term of office for both positions will begin on January 16, 2018, and run through January 15, 2022.

Candidates for Position A are:

  • Michael Flaherman
  • David Miller

Candidates for Position B are:

  • Bruce H. Jennings
  • Michael Bilbrey (Incumbent)
  • Margaret Brown
  • Wisam "Sam" Altowaiji

The Candidate Forum, moderated by the League of Women Voters of Sacramento County, will take place on Thursday, September 7 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the CalPERS Auditorium, 400 P Street, Sacramento. A live webcast of the event will be broadcast and posted later for those who are unable to watch.

Results of the election will be determined after the voting deadline of October 2. In the event that no candidate has a majority of valid votes cast, a runoff election will be held between the top two candidates, with final results determined in December.

For more information about the election, including details of the Candidate Forum and live webcast, as well as candidate statements (beginning September 1), visit the Board Elections page.
