Environmental Protection Agency Climate Registry Commends Efforts

SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) has been recognized for reducing its enterprise-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 79 percent, exceeding the Governor's mandated 20 percent reduction by nearly four times over, and eight years ahead of schedule. The recognition was made by the Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Registry.

Compared to other California state agencies, CalPERS had the highest reduction in entity-wide greenhouse gas emissions.

"We are certainly proud to receive this recognition from the Climate Registry," said Douglas Hoffner, CalPERS' Interim Chief Executive Officer. "The honor belongs to everyone here at CalPERS, who made this and other conservation measures a top priority."

CalPERS also was commended for reporting and providing third-party verification of its 2014 greenhouse gas emissions to the highest standard, and for being a leader in a sustainable future. The reduction was measured against a 2010 baseline.

The Climate Registry also noted that CalPERS is one of the few state agencies that use third-party verification by outside reviewers who verify the accuracy of CalPERS' calculations of the greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

For more than eight decades, CalPERS has built retirement and health security for state, school, and public agency members who invest their lifework in public service. Our pension fund serves more than 1.8 million members in the CalPERS retirement system and administers benefits for more than 1.4 million members and their families in our health program, making us the largest defined-benefit public pension in the U.S. CalPERS' total fund market value currently stands at approximately $307 billion.
