Chief Investment Officer
Ted Eliopoulos assumed the role of CalPERS' chief investment officer (CIO) in September 2014.
He is responsible for managing an investment portfolio of approximately $350 billion, comprised of public and private assets, and a team of nearly 400. The CIO determines prudent, forward-thinking investment strategies in accordance with CalPERS' fiduciary responsibilities, policies, and corporate governance standards, and provides leadership and counsel to the board.
Ted joined CalPERS in January 2007 and served as senior investment officer (SIO) for the Real Estate division and the Real Assets unit before being appointed interim CIO in June 2014.
Prior to CalPERS, he served in the California State Treasurer's Office as deputy treasurer and then chief deputy treasurer. He has held positions in both the private and public sectors, including real estate development and environmental management, the latter with the U.S. Department of Energy.
Ted began his career in the Los Angeles office of Latham & Watkins as an associate attorney in the real estate division.
He currently serves on the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s Investor Advisory Group and is on the Alliance for Southern California Innovation's Advisory Council. Prior board affiliations include the U.S. Real Estate Roundtable and the Pension Real Estate Association, where he served as board chair for one term.
Ted received a bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from Dartmouth College and holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia.
