Upon election as California state controller

Betty T. Yee is serving her first term on the CalPERS Board of Administration. She became California's 32nd state controller in January 2015, following two terms of service on the California Board of Equalization.

As the state's chief financial officer, Betty is responsible for accountability and disbursement of the state's financial resources, and administering payroll for more than 350,000 state and CSU employees. She has independent auditing authority over government agencies that spend state funds and she safeguards many types of unclaimed property until the rightful owners can be found.

She has over 30 years of experience in public service, specializing in state and local finance, and tax policy.

Previously Betty served as chief deputy director for budget with the California Department of Finance, where she led the development of the Governor's budget, negotiations with the state Legislature and key budget stakeholders, and fiscal analyses of legislation on behalf of the Administration. Before that she served in senior staff positions for several fiscal and policy committees in both houses of the state Legislature.

Betty is a member of numerous financing authorities and fiscal and financial oversight entities related to housing, infrastructure, environment, energy, transportation, health, and science. She chairs the Franchise Tax Board, serves on the Ceres Board of Directors, and serves as an ex-officio member on the California State Teachers' Retirement System board.

A native of San Francisco, Betty received her bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and holds a master's degree in public administration from Golden Gate University, San Francisco.
