CalPERS Websites and the Heartbleed Bug
my|CalPERS (for both member and external business partner self-service) and calpers.ca.gov websites are not impacted by the Heartbleed bug.
The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. This weakness allows stealing information protected, under normal conditions, by the secure sockets layer/transport layer security (SSL/TLS) encryption used to secure the Internet. SSL/TLS provides communication security and privacy over the Internet for websites and Web applications, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs).
Careful analysis determined that the Heartbleed bug affects sites using specific versions of OpenSSL. We have reviewed our external CalPERS sites and found that our servers use a different version of OpenSSL that is not affected by the Heartbleed bug.
We strive to take extreme care in ensuring the safety and security of our infrastructure for our members’, employers’, and external business partners’ information.
