Taxes & Your Retirement
Understanding taxes can be confusing and perhaps a little intimidating at times. To help you understand the tax liability for your CalPERS retirement allowance, we've put together some information to help you.
Understanding Your 1099R Tax Form
The 1099R tax forms are mailed by the end of January each year. This form provides you with the information needed to complete your federal and State tax returns. To help you better understand the information on your form, we've created a simple guide.
To get started, it's helpful to have your 1099R tax form in front of you so you can refer to it while viewing our Guide to Understanding Your 1099R Tax Form (PDF).
Your 1099R Tax Form
You can View Your Tax Statement online for the last five tax years, if available. You must first register for a my|CalPERS account before you can view your tax statement. If you have not registered, Register Now. You may also Contact Us to request a duplicate or replacement 1099R tax form. Please note that our Regional Offices are unable to provide you with duplicate or replacement copies of this tax form.
Changing Your Tax Withholding
After you complete your tax returns, you may find that you want to change the federal or California State withholding amounts deducted from your monthly benefit payment. To do so, complete a Tax Withholding Election (PDF) form, then mail or fax it to CalPERS. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and complete all required information. Retirees can also log in to their my|CalPERS account to change their tax withholdings.
If you need help in changing your withholding, we can assist you. However, since we cannot provide tax advice, you should contact your tax consultant or the IRS and the State Franchise Tax Board for specific information on your tax-related needs.
