CalPERS Welcomes Ron Lind to the Board of Administration
SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) today welcomed Ron Lind to the Pension Fund’s Board of Administration.
Lind, the President of United Food & Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), Local 5, was appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly and Senate Rules Committee to serve on the CalPERS Board as the public representative. He replaces Lou Moret, who left the CalPERS Board in December 2011.
“We look forward to Mr. Lind joining our Board,” said CalPERS Board President Rob Feckner. “His experience and leadership will be valuable as we work with the State, our city, county and school employers to deliver secure pension and health benefits to our members.”
During his 30-year career with the union, Lind has served as Communications Director, Organizing Director, and Education Director prior to his election as President of Local 428, one of the eight locals that merged to form Local 5. Lind is a Vice-President of the UFCW International Union, a Vice-President of the California Labor Federation and is the President of the South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council. Lind also serves as the chair of the Northern California UFCW Employers Pension Fund, which has more than $3 billion in assets.
CalPERS is the largest public pension fund in the U.S. with assets totaling $254 billion. It administers retirement benefits for more than 1.6 million California State, local government, and public school employees, retirees, and their families on behalf of more than 3,000 public employers, and health benefits for more than 1.3 million enrollees. The average CalPERS pension benefit is $2,420 per month. The average benefit for those who retired in the most recent fiscal year that ended June 30, 2012, is $3,025 per month.
